Being one of the 10 oldest museums of Turkey, The Adana Archeological Museum was established in 1924 just after the declaration of the Republic of Turkey. The museum contains remainings from Adana and Çukurova Valley. The findings especially from Gözlükule, Yumuktepe, Sirkeli, and Misis tells in the Çukurova Region were brought over to this museum in 1934, 1936, 1938 and 1958, respectively. The ethnographical section of the museum is very rich. 'Statuette of Mountain Chrystal' is very interesting.
Museum is at the present place since 5 January 1972.
The Courtyard:
At the entry of the museum a gate lion dating to Hittite Era which was brought from Taşucu, Silifke; two statues of Augustus from Uzuncaburç (Olba-Diocaesarea) and various sarcophagi with rich architectural elements; jars, inscriptions, altars and catapult balls.
First Floor:
Stone artifacts are displayed in this hall. Marble sarcophagus, known as Achilleus Sarcophagus, which depicts the Trojan Wars with high reliefs, was brought from Tarsus. Additionally, Sarcophagus with Medusa from the ancient city of Augusta which is now in the lake of Seyhan Dam, and man-size bronze Karataş Statue which was brought from the ancient city of Magarsus at Karataş are the most interesting and attractive artifacts of this hall.
Hall of Chronological Remains:
The artifacts belonging to the civilizations on the Çukurova Valley from First Age to the Ottoman period are displayed in this section. Amongst the artifacts displayed in this section are: Libation elements, pottery, oil lamps, figurines of gods, goddesses, human and animals. Mosaic of 'Orpheus Playing Lyre' which was found in Tepebağ, Adana, is also in this hall.
Hall of Regional Artifacts:
Rich glassware samples, Selçuk ceramics, seals belonging to various civilizations are displayed in this hall.
Hall of Coins, Seals and Jewellery:
The coins belonging to Lydian Era, when the coins were seen first time, and thereafter, jewelleries of different sorts and treasures found at different towns of Adana are disolayed in this hall.
