| AQUADUCTS
When you face to the Upper or State Agora, on your left, at the lower skirt of the hill, you will see a structure that looks like a piece of wall. This was one of the four aquaducts which supported the city for water supply.
The water was transported to the city by means of these four aquaducts built in distances of from 15 kms./9 miles to 42 kms./26 miles in such a way that they could be higher than the level of the water sources (springs) provided that the height would not exceed 11 meters/36 feet, the water enclosed in the terracotta (baked clay) pipes on these aquaducts came to the water depot and the water palace of this city by means of natural force of gravity only. From these two storage buildings, the water was sent to the rest of the city by the same type of pipes. You will see many many examples of these pipelines as you stroll sthroughout the site.
