DOUBLE COLONNADE
![]() In front of the Odeon and along the north side of the Upper Agora, there is a long structure which, generally, surrounded the agoras. There are remains of the columns on both sides of the structure which were to their full height with capitals on them depending on the time of the fashion of the capitals. On those capitals came a large monolithic block of stone called 'architrave' lined up sided-by-side along the colonnade on both sides. And, from one side to the other came hard wooden beams at certain intervals which carried a roof above them probably with tiles. The floor was entirely was decorated with mosaics. In other words, this one was a closed portico where the vendors from the agora nearby brough their portable trays alongside of this colonnade to be able to sell their merchandise to the public especially in hot and rainy days and this was one of the promenading places of the city. For this reason, you will see several games played by these people like Backgammon, three-stones, five-stones, etc. ![]() The same Double Colonnade above in snow. A very rare scene to see !
