| FORTIFICATION WALL of EPHESUS
When Alexander The Great came to this area, noticing the strategical position of the surrounding, he ordered Lysimachus, one of his generals and later the sovereign of the district, to build a fortification wall on the crests of the hills surrounding the area, which were already natural defence line. He played a trick to the Ephesians of the City of Ephesus II. The trick was blocking the sewer-lines of the city and the citizens seeing that there was no means to survive in the old city, they had to move to the new location where Alexander The Great wanted. ![]() During one of the years that I was strolling on the fortification walls of the city, I came across with these two grave-looking places. As result of questioning several scholars around here, I could not come out to any solution. One idea I have is: They may have made these pits for libation or to sacrifice animals asking the gods to keep the enemy away from the city. OR, they may have been burial places for some important commanders served the fortification walls for long period of time. I guess, the scholars will have to work harder to find out the reason for these pits !
