ne thing is for sure that you have to start touring from the Upper Gate for the sake of easiness and leisure of the tour. But if you are fond of trekking, you can start from the Lower Gate of the site. Once you came to the Upper Gate (about 3 kms/1.8 miles from Selçuk), you can start touring the site on your own OR you can hire one of the guides posted at either end with almost any language. But one little WARNING !!! You'd better check the guide's language proficiency which should not take you more than 20 seconds to understand if he/she is capable as there are some inefficient guides around. Make sure he/she has official license issued by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Turkey with a valid visa issued every year which can be seen at the back of the license and must be worn visibly all the time during the tour. The tour takes about 2½ hours if you like to learn everything about the site. Guiding fee is minimum € 25.-/US$32.- (as of 25 Nov 2004) FOR ONE HOUR. You can probably find one for lower fee but when you pay less you get less. As thet say: 'Win some, loose some !!!'
